Georgia Ranked Highly in MovieMaker.Com Entertainment Survey

The state of Georgia fared very well in Moviemaker.com’s recent rankings of the top cities to live and work as a moviemaker in 2016. The website released two lists based on the size of a city’s population (above or below 400,000), and Georgia cities claimed the top spot in both. Atlanta ranked number one in “Top 10 Big Cities” and Savannah outpaced the competition in “Top 10 Small Cities and Towns,” with both rankings taking into account factors such as film production dollars, film festivals, access to facilities, cost of living and tax incentives.

Atlanta was chosen as the top big city due to a unique combination of film infrastructure, an improving talent pool and favorable tax incentives. Georgia offers a transferrable state tax credit up to 30 percent of a production company’s qualifying Georgia expenditures. Additionally, Atlanta provides favorable weather and a thriving entertainment culture that is attractive to many in the industry.

Savannah topped the list for cities with a population under 400,000 thanks to its winning ability to bring together old and new. The possibility of filming in the city’s large historical district or its scenic coastal settings, combined with an up-and-coming film culture based around the yearly Savannah Film Festival, has attracted many young filmmakers to the area. Moreover, the tax incentives are even sweeter in Savannah, where film producers meeting a minimum-spend requirement are eligible for a 10 percent cash rebate on top of the basic Georgia credit amount.
