Employers with Self-Insured Health Plans Take Note

The deadline is fast approaching for the payment of plan fees to fund patient-centered outcomes research that were created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA). Issuers of specified health insurance policies and plan sponsors of applicable self-insured health plans are required to pay the fee by July 31. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) fee was established by the ACA to fund a nonprofit institute that will conduct comparative research on the benefits of medical treatments, services, procedures, and drugs to help patients, clinicians, purchasers, and policymakers make informed health decisions. The recently announced one-year delay in the coverage mandate for larger employers apparently does not change or delay this PCORI fee.
