In the Winter 2012 issue of The Franchise Handbook, Bennett Thrasher Shareholder Peter Stathopoulos and Supervisor Chiquita Banks co-authored the article ‘State Tax Issues Franchisees Often Ignore.’ The article stresses the importance of not ignoring or deferring state and local tax filing obligations since state departments of revenue have the ability to “pierce the corporate veil” and make franchise owners personally liable for certain tax liabilities of a franchise.  Peter and Chiquita discuss the complexity of different state and local tax obligations that can create significant pitfalls for business owners, such as state sales and use tax, sales tax for restaurants, responsible person liability, successor liability, property tax and income tax.

Bennett Thrasher Shareholder Scott Hazy was recently profiled for an article that appeared on the Georgia State University GSU Magazine website.  In the article, “An International Twist,” Hazy recounts how an international business course altered the path of his career.  While he continued his major in accounting, he said “that class propelled me to maintain an interest in international affairs.” Today he specializes in international audit and finance reporting for Bennett Thrasher and most recently was elected president of DFK International, a top 10 international association of independent accounting firms and business advisers.  Hazy’s advice to students of all ages? “The world is becoming a very small place and a tight community. Get outside of your comfort zone and get out there and learn from it!”
